BEEGLE – Energy Efficient Search (powered by Google)

The principle behind the South African born Beegle Search Engine (Black Energy Efficient Google) is based on the fact that the display of different colours consumes different amounts of energy on computer based monitors. The creators of Beegle cite a 2002 study from Roberson, who tested a variety of CRT and LCD monitors and found that an all black screen consumed less energy than an all white screen.

The idea behind the Beegle Search Engine comes from a blog, which estimated that a black Google would save 750 megawatt-hours a year.  We feel every saving helps!

In addition to the Beegle Search Engine, Beegle founders have included a direct link to the Eskom’s Load Shedding Schedule – for daily viewing/outage planning.
